A Component is the unit the toolchain bootstrap pipeline operates on: a name, the source kind (vendored tarball, git archive, or in-tree directory), the recipe that knows how to compile and archive the component's sources via the ComponentBuildContext::compiler abstraction, and the set of expected output artefacts.
